I recently reviewed the Nuki 2.0 Smart Lock, and while I liked it a lot, I had a couple of complaints that I hoped the Austrian-based company would address in the next version. However, I wasn’t expecting that new version to come so soon. Yes, the Nuki Smart Lock 3.0 is now available to buy from the Nuki website. The company has also announced the Nuki Smart Lock 3.0 Pro, which offers more options and features.
The two main improvements I asked for were quieter operation and for the lock to be available in white. As they say, ask, and you shall receive, and the good news is both requests have been fulfilled. The Nuki 3.0 is now quieter, thanks to an improved gearbox mechanism, and available in white.
What’s the difference between the Nuki Smart Lock 3.0 and the Smart Lock 3.0 Pro I hear you cry? The latter now has a built-in Wi-Fi module, which negates the need for the separate Nuki Bridge for remote operation. It also includes the Power Pack as standard, which offers a significantly better battery life over using standard AAs, with up to two years before a recharge is necessary. If you prefer black, you’ll need to go for the Pro, which is still available in black and also features an aluminium ring for a more premium look. The main appeal of the standard Smart Lock 3.0 is the price, which is now just €149/£129 compared to €249/£215 for the Smart Lock 3.0 Pro.
The accessories, namely the Bridge and the PowerPack, are now only available in white too but as external devices, the fob and the keypad are still only available in black.
One other major change is that the door sensor, which was previously integrated into the lock and offered as a beta, is now only available as an entirely separate device. This will cost you an extra €39/£39 but Nuki says it could not optimise the sensor to work internally so had to remove it to an external device to make it operate reliably.
To install a Nuki you will need a compatible cylinder and if you don’t you have to replace it. To make this easier Nuki is now offering its own universal cylinder on its website for €79/£75, which it says offers the highest security SKG mark, and comes with five keys.
