WITH slightly more than two months left until scratch-and-display parking coupons will be phased out entirely in Selangor, only some 60 applicants have signed up to be authorised eKupon agents throughout the state.
These agents are meant to provide motorists with another mode of payment to further facilitate the state’s initiative to go fully cashless for on-street parking.
The state government had introduced the eKupon option via the Smart Selangor Parking (SSP) app on Jan 3 as scratch-and-display coupons would no longer be used after March 31.
Selangor local government, public transport and new village development committee chairman Ng Sze Han said these agents would help non-smartphone users or those who had difficulty using the SSP app.
“This is to cater to anyone unfamiliar with the parking app. They can go to these authorised agents to pay for parking.
“We are still recruiting, so those who are interested to become eKupon agents can apply,” he said.
Businesses with Companies Commission of Malaysia registration can apply to become an eKupon agent via the app.
All registered eKupon agents for every local council in Selangor can be accessed via the app.
“We urge those who still have the physical coupons to use them up before the deadline,” said Ng.
StarMetro had reported that while many motorists welcomed the fully cashless system due to its convenience and ease of use, some are worried that the digitalisation efforts would alienate certain segments of society.
When the fully cashless system began, some motorists were unaware of the transition from cash to digital payment methods for parking.
Some are also worried about their leftover parking coupons as the March 31 deadline looms.
Meanwhile, Ng said existing contracts with parking operators would continue.
“Only the payment method has changed from cash to digital.
“The enforcement for parking is still handled by the local councils, while operators assist by providing and maintaining the devices used to check if motorists have paid,” he explained.
Ng said on-street parking machines would be dismantled.
Previously, some local councils had already implemented the e-payment system, complemented by coin machines or scratch-and-display coupons.
Selangor is the latest state to implement the cashless payment system for parking after Penang and Kuala Lumpur.
